More about this item

This is a an incredibly beautiful pink, green, and white hand-cut stone, called Ocean Jasper from the country of Madagascar. Cut into a free-form style, this type of stone comes in a variety of colors. For this particular stone, there is a lot of pink and green, with white streaks and splotches of green in circular patterns, a characteristic feature of ocean jasper. There are also some druzy features in this stone, which is a geological term that refers to coating of fine crystals on a rock fracture surface, vein or within a geode. Size is 2.5 inches (63.5mm) in length and 1.75 inches (44.5mm) in width. Jasper is part of the quartz family just like agates, but jasper stones are opaque whereas agates are translucent. For a beauty like this, all that is needed is a simple sterling snake chain and sterling bezel. The bezel completely encircles the stone. The bezel is handmade and polished to a brushed finished; a jump ring was soldered to the top of the bezel. A sterling bail is connected to the jump ring with a bit of sterling wire wrapping. The back of the stone is fully visible. This type of setting does not "bury" the stone in metal; it allows a 3D view of the stone and keeps the pendant light. To keep the stone in place, 2-part epoxy glue was added to the inside of the bezel. This stone was purchased from the Gitche Gumme Agate and History Museum located in Grand Marais, Michigan (in the upper peninsula). If you are ever in this area, be sure to visit, there are many, many specimens of agates and jasper, especially from the Great Lakes area. The museum is operated by a wonderful and knowledgeable lady who calls herself the Agate Lady. Check out her website for detailed information on agate formation: * Ocean Jasper from Madagascar * Size 2.5 in (63.5mm) by 1.75 in (44.5mm). * Sterling bezel and bail * Sterling snake chain, 18 inch.
