Traditionally, the term "easel painting" was used to describe a painter's personal works on smaller canvases as opposed to commissions for large formal commissions. These works were therefore smaller scale ones that the artist could produce in his studio, as opposed to very large canvases or murals. Many artists thus produced smaller privately commissioned works for collectors, or as personal devotional gifts to chapels and oratories.
Today easels are still needed by any artist who paints on small canvases stretched on a frame.
