How We Collect Our Sage: Rio Grande Gorge Area, Hand-Picked, Sustainably-Harvested, Organic Wild SAGE is hand-gathered, sorted, trimmed and tied into bundles by family, friends and I on our Sacred Land located in the extreme desert region of the Rio Grande Gorge Area. This pungent and purifying variety of sage is gathered fresh from the wild and carefully dried to preserve freshness.
Why Sage Is Used: RioSage may be powerful as a therapeutic tool for cleansing the “energy field” according to the somatic science of Bio-Energetics. Native Americans This herb is considered "sacred" by Native Americans who have used these “medicine bundles” or the loose herb for generations in "smudging" ceremony. Use sage to “smudge” or purify the mind, body and spirit before praying. The smell of sage will remind you of the desert and the sacredness of life. Smudges put out a lot of soothing smoke. You may find our sage to be very refreshing, relaxing & purifying to your system. It is also used for purifying the atmosphere & dispersing negativity. It may be used to ritually purify sacred items such as pipes, and eagle feathers. Others use it to purify their homes, offices, cars while some people carry a small amount of sage in a pocket or “medicine pouch” to insure personal and spiritual safety. Its traditional medicinal uses are as an astringent, antiseptic, carminative and as a disinfectant against inflammation. It is known as a soothing, calming aromatic tea which is considered especially beneficial for women who are not pregnant or nursing.
“Smudge” with a RioSage Megabundle: Place in an abalone shell (a Traditional container) or other heat-proof container partially filled with sand or salt. Light the tip, blow it out and direct the smoke around your body and/or the space you wish to "clear". You may also set the wand in the container and use a "smudging feather" or your hand to direct the smoke. To extinguish, invert smudge into the sand or salt to smother or drench the burning tip in water until it is extinguished and save the remainder of the bundle for another time. Never leave lit smudge unattended. Care should be used when extinguishing. Note: Remove any ornamentation such as dried flowers before burning. Some people like to snip off the string from the area they will burn while others allow the string to burn naturally with the Sage.

Green or Environmental Concerns: Sustainably-harvesting means not pulling up root systems & harvesting just enough so that the plant will continue to thrive and generally caring for each plant source. Only the top half of each plant is used. Because we gather small batches each year, we generally leave over 80% of the live sage in any harvest area. We subscribe to the Ancient Native tradition to leave enough live plants to complete their life cycle - to produce flowers & seeds. Sage is an integral part of the local ecosystem. For instance, Butterflies use this plant as a host for their young. Southwest cuisine adds sage for a pleasantly sharp flavor that contrasts well with sweet or fruity sauces. For cooking or making tea, test our sage by using a pinch, finely ground, as it may be much too pungent for cooking. Area natives remember this sage as a potent tea given since childhood to ward off illness.
