The khokhloma handicraft became known from XVII century in Semenovo village which started as a trading post where local craftsmen brought their wares for sale. During the XIX century, items with khokhloma painting were famous not only in Russia but in Persia, India, Middle East, the USA and Australia as well.

The export of khokhloma items grew after the worldwide exhibition in 1889 in Paris. Wood for Khokhloma items preliminarily kept on the air within a year; then carved of different shapes; item covered by linseed oil, aluminum powder, then is painted and lacquered. After that, the articles were coated with linseed oil (nowadays, synthetic oil) and hardened in a kiln at high temperatures
