Description of the subject depicted in the print: Italian friar Girolamo Savonarola was a religious reformer who claimed a supernatural gift of prophecy. He criticized the corruption of Pope Alexander VI and was eventually excommunicated. In 1498 Savonarola was declared guilty of heresy and hanged. We are here introduced into the cell of the great Italian reformer Savonarola, at the moment of his inditing his celebrated letter to the German potentates, calling on them to assist in suppressing the abuses of the Church, denying the authority of the Pope, and offering to prove before a council of divines, that so far from being the vicegerent of the Almighty, he had no claim to be even considered as a Christian, much less as a Bishop. The artistry has admirably succeeded in stamping the features of the daring monk, with the expression of energy and genius, and in depicting at the same time the repose and quiet of the monastic cell, as opposed to the fiery passions and restless nature of its occupant. TURKEY Trebizond on Black Sea - 1887 Wood Engraving

This old engraving has substantiated and stimulated a recent interest of mine; this physical thing now hangs in front of my reading chair, and I have found the digital copy of the charming old book from which it was cut (VOYAGES AND TRAVELS OR SCENES IN MANY LANDS VOLUME
de Colange, Leo (Ed.)).
Published by E.W. Walker, Boston, MA (1887))
I recommend enjoying some of the 19th century paintings under "Trabzon in art" in commons.wikipedia., which is where I first discovered this one. In some of these it is the artists viewpoint of serious (not ) peacefulness that I especially enjoy, and now this is substantiated, in front of my reading chair.
