Despite the title, I would say, after quickly skimming the book, that this is less about the Soviets and more about the Communist Chinese victories over the Nationalist Chinese (led by Chiang Kai-Shek) in the 1930s and 1940s. In a subtle and veiled way it is, perhaps, a septuagenarian's answer to the question, "What happened? How did I lose this country?"
The title, which does not contain "Communist" or "Mao" is Chiang's refusal to acknowledge the usurpers.
A good Cold War book for those interested in China.
