Here is an unusual and striking mask.
I believe it is probably Japanese.
It is carved of a light colored wood, possibly cypress. It has no paint or remnants of paint, or even any finish that I can see. It does have a nice polished patina.
It is a caricature of a face, with an exaggerated chin and nose, and unusual peaked hat. I believe it was made to be used in a drama or play.
There are eye slits, nostril holes, and a head strap of twisted cotton string and rubber.
I tried it on, and it is amazing how it conforms perfectly to the contours of your face on the inside...it is actually very skillfully carved.
This is a very striking piece...sorry I'm not an expert and don't know more. But, I know that I LIKE it, and it has a great folk-art appeal. It would be a striking decor item to group with other curiosities.
It measures 8" tall by 6 3/4" wide.
In excellent condition with no damage, chips or gouges.
From a smoke-free home.
