This is a wonderful vintage gold filled and black enamel oval shaped bangle bracelet. It is stamped on the inside “Gold Filled 1-20-10K”. Gold filled jewelry is not the same thing as gold plated. Gold filled is stronger than pure karat gold because the inner metal base adds structural strength. The exterior of the gold filled jewelry is a solid 10K layer of gold, it is much thicker than gold plate. It has a wonderful luster with the appearance of fine jewelry. By law, this layer has to be at least 1/20 of the total weight of the metal portion of the piece of jewelry. Because of the thickness of the surface more finely worked designs are possible.
This bracelet is etched with a delicate floral design that looks like daisies and leaves. It has a sliding insert clasp mechanism that allows it to open to 3 1/2 inches wide to put on the wrist and then it securely slides closed again. The bangle is hinged and has a safety guard chain attached to prevent loss. When closed the bangle's inner dimension is 2 1/2 inches by 2 1/4 inches. It is 3/8 on an inch wide. This is pretty standard to fit most wrists. It weighs .5 ounces on my postage scale, which converts to 14.17 grams. I'm not sure when my mother purchased this, my guess would be prior to the 1950s.
It is in very good vintage condition with age appropriate wear as you can see by the enlarged photographs. There are no dings or dents. If you look closely you will see that the black enamel is not applied perfectly. It was obviously hand painted and there are spots where the enamel touches the gold or is not solid in the spaces. I think you can see this in the photos if you look closely. It would make a wonderful addition to your collection of vintage jewelry.
