Vintage 1928 Vega Whyte Laydie #2 open back banjo with case converted to an Archtop with the addition of the archtop tone ring. Serial numbers for the body and support dowel match (82634). This instrument has had some obvious upgrades and is not all original. I bought this from the original owner's daughter who is probably in her 70's or 80's. The Vintage guitar book puts the value of this fine instrument at $3800.00.
I am not a Banjo expert but I will do my best to describe what I see. There are some dings and scratches as you would expect for a banjo of this vintage (83 years old). The banjo has 20 frets and they are in excellent shape. I have received a few conflicting emails from so called experts and 2 of three say that this is a newer Vega neck maybe from the 50's. Please do your own research. I have replaced the head and the bridge but have the old pieces saved in the case. The tone is incredible. The fingerboard has dried out a bit over the years and you can see some minor cracking in the grain which does not affect playability. I have oiled the fingerboard 3 times and it looks fine. I would continue putting oil on it until the wood is replenished. The heel cap on the butt of the neck was cracked and repaired by the previous owner (this is just a trim piece). There are no cracks in the neck, headstock or body that I can see. I believe that this is a plectrum banjo even though it only has 20 frets. The banjo has 30 brackets plus the tailpiece. It appears as though a few of the brackets were changed out over the years. Not sure if the tailpiece is original. The tone ring has been upgraded to an archtop type tone ring. The head size is 11 13/16. Please do your own research as I have done. What you see is what you get. You will love this one. If you are a player this banjo will blow you away.
This is a rare find and an awesome banjo. I know where the banjo came from and it was well loved. She needs a good home again.
