This is a vintage or antique Crucifix made with ebony wood set in silver overlay on bronze or brass. The top of the cross has INRI on a banner, below is Jesus or Christ with a halo or sun behind his head. Below Christ is a skull and crossbones, which symbolizes Golgotha (Calvary), the site at which Jesus was crucified; which the Gospels say means in Hebrew “the place of the skull.” This was common to see on Crucifixes manufactured in European Catholic countries. On the back in the center is a heart with a sword through it representing the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Cross measures approximately 2 3/4 inches long and 1 5/8 inches wide. The silver tone chain is included, but it is not original to the cross, it measures approximately 24 inches in length from end to end.

This is in good vintage condition. There is a lovely old patina where the brass or bronze color shows through. There are metal pins or nails on the back, one is missing as you can see in the picture. The wood does have a couple small age cracks and there is some tarnishing of the metal. I have not polished or cleaned this piece, I will leave that up to you. Although this is not signed, it is most likely from Germany and circa late 1800s or early 1900s, but I am guessing at the age.
