Vintage Mauretania Floaty Mechanical Pencil 1940s Ship Liner
This is a vintage advertising mechanical pencil with a floating cruise liner ship inside the top. The barrel is black and one one side has “R.M.S. Mauretania” embossed in gold lettering. The “Floaty” space has a little model of the ship enclosed in liquid. The Mauretania was launched in 1938 in Birkenhead, England. The ship was designed for the London to New York service. I'm sure my Mom purchased this or it was given as a souvenir on her trip from England to the States when she came here as a War Bride in the late 1940s after World War II had ended. It measures approximately 5 1/4 inches in length.
I loved playing with this pen growing up and it shows. There is surface wear from age and use and lots of little scratches on the plastic. The gold finish has wear/tarnish and there is a ridge in the plastic where the clip turned around the pen. The clip is securely attached. The floating feature works great. It still has some of the lead pieces stored inside. There is not a place for an eraser, it has a hard top.
Even with the wear it is an interesting mechanical pencil to add to your collection. I have not found another one for sale like it. If you are looking for a mint collector's piece, this is not for you. If you would love to have a great piece of history you will like this pencil.
