Those of us who have visited the Southwest know that it is steeped in magical lore, stunning landscapes and skilled artisans, both past and present. My father was employed by a utility company and worked on the construction of power lines from Hoover Dam to the Valley of the Sun. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend a few summers with him in some of the remote outposts that fringed the reservations, and will never forget the spectacular Pow Wows, the colorful garments, the intricate beadwork, weavings and sand paintings. I am still smitten by the craftsmanship and artistry of the pottery and jewelry. No other jewelry brings the power and connection to the earth as does the work crafted by the hands of Native Americans.
I am proud to present this stunning example of 'old pawn' Zuni handcrafted jewelry. Made from sterling silver, and adorned with 114 individually carved blue-green needlepoint and three round cabochon turquoise stones, this antique Zuni necklace is a spectacular example of Native American craftsmanship. This gorgeous necklace measures 24 inches long and weighs 2.0 ounces in total (56.68 grams). The chain has been forged in such a way that it will clasp snugly around any neck, no matter the circumference. This necklace has great movement, and lays perfectly due to the four sections which are skillfuly linked together. A most unusual naja hangs from the bottom of the necklace, which to me conjures images of the legendary thunderbird, or a powerful bird of prey. (Interesting note: 'Naja' means crescent in the Navajo language, and popular lore attributes the shape to the iron shoes worn by the Spaniards' horses). This piece of jewelry is signed DM.
I can honestly say that I have only one other time seen a needlepoint piece with such intricate detailing. This necklace is a rare treasure, and is being offered at the attractive price of $950.00, temporarily marked down from $1050.00. I have seen smaller, less detailed necklaces offered for retail at $1500.00 or more. Please feel free to contact me for more pictures, or with any questions you might have about this necklace!
