Vintage cottage style vanity benches, from the 1920s or 30s, in the elegant depression style, CUSTOM FINISHED TO YOUR SPECIFICATION in my classic heirloom distressed chic-shabby lacquered finish.
These are the benches that go with the distressed cottage chic painted vanities and bedroom suites. We give you the opportunity to pick out the models you want to furnish your room, and tell us how you want it done! This is one of the favorite styles to use for the cottage decor, and since it is widely available to us we offer the chance to custom order it for your own decorating needs. You may buy just one piece for an accent, or build a whole bedroom set via our other custom listings in this category. Our customized painted furniture listings allow you to pick out only the components of a set that you require, or even simply deliver us your furniture to have it restored in a professional high-grade enamel finish.
We offer all the things you could possibly need to create your own chic cottage bedroom! This listing is for the standard size flat-top bench in this style, as a single accent peice, or as a componant of a whole room. You may browse our other listings to find the other components that you need, or if having your own furniture restored or furniture you acquired from another vendor, contact me prior to purchase to submit your request and make arrangements. Rather than settling for what's already in a set that's already painted in a color you may not want, as you will find with other sellers, you can make your room your way. It's easy! You pick out the one you like, and tell us how you want it painted, in any of a dozen different custom colors! If you need more than one matching piece, simply pick out the things you need!
This listing is for the standard flat-top bench with turned legs and straight rungs, as shown. More elaborate benches, such as with arms and backs, or boudoire chairs, are also available on separate listings. We offer these benches and boudoire chairs as a stock item to those of you who already have a vanity and need to finish off your room with the accompanying seat OR as an upgrade to your existing custom order to make your custom vanity desk or bedroom purchase with us a really complete set. In this way you can have the accent accessories for your room finished to match your other bedroom pieces. With simple clean lines, a sweet cottage charm, and an aged heirloom feel, these will lend that last little nuance of charming authenticity to your decor.

VARIATIONS: There are two major variations. Seats can be screw-down padded full-seat, or can be wooden framed with a smaller padded seat in the center. Here is an example:
As you can see, these are identical models, the one at right with full-size padded seat in non-distressed brite-white; the one at left in heirloom ivory distressed, with wood frame seat and small pad center. If you unscrew and take the pad off, you will find the border and slot for a caned seat underneath. This type may be caned before painting, or may be caned at a later time, at the buyer's discretion. Here is an illustration:

The wooden frame seats were originally intended for press-in caning. We cannot always guarantee one seat type over another, so check our stock prior to purchase if you have a preference. Benches may be altered for either type of seat, but if you say nothing we will give you the type we have on hand.
Seats are provided as we get them inclusive of the item price, with the intention that you will recover them yourself to match your decor with your own fabric. We supply the old pad seats, or if they are not present, include a new seat "blank" that you can easily cover over. Recovered seats, newly upholstered prior to shipping, may be completed as an upgrade, at cost, as follows:
Our standard default seat covers are a stock velore we carry in navy blue or burgundy, as shown at left on this black-lacquer chair. It is provided at cost upon request. We also offer a plain off-white muslin type material, which provides you with a clean new pad seat you can easily cover off with your own fabric later.

ABOUT OUR COTTAGE CRAFTSMANSHIP: Items are finished in our own professional distressed paint, hand-rubbed, and sealed with a professional varnish coat for protection and durability. **ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTE!** This is not do-it-yourselfer paint, but rather a professional quality oil-based finish. Our competition slaps on the cheapest housepaint they can find and simply scuffs or actually scrapes off the edges of the wood, leaving it damaged and open to the elements, not to mention unrealistic. Our pieces are gently rubbed through to the old finish underneath on all surfaces, not just the corners, but flat surfaces as well, and completely sealed with multiple coats of old-fashioned varnish against the damaging effects of the atmosphere. The result is a smoother, softer surface that will remain durable for years to come, and a look and presence far more authentic than what our competition will offer you, not to mention far cheaper. In many cases you can see woodgrain through the painted finish, as well as the tiny imperfections that show a piece's true age and give it character. It has our own secret satin-touch smooth feel, free of drips and brush-marks, in a soft heirloom color with the true look of a genuine antique paint job, worn around the edges in all the right places. We call it "worn to perfection" and are well-known for excellent quality craftsmanship. Although we do our own finishes, we use authentic antiques and vintage, ranging in age from 60 to 125 years old, and the finished paint jobs so authentic in look and feel they have been known to fool unsuspecting dealers. We have sold chic orders to happy customers many times over the past few years, and our pieces have even been used in restaurants and bed&breakfasts around the country, and on occassion the magazine spreads for cottage decor you see at the bookstore and in the grocery check-outs. Whether for home use or commercial, you have our guarantee of a professional and high-quality end product. You may order just one for an accent piece, or multiple items enough to furnish your whole room or business! And please check our other offers in this category as other peices are available, both already finished as well as custom orders to your own specification.
COLORS AND EFFECTS: Our standard and most popular color is an antiqued off-white or heirloom white, although both bright white and cream are also available. You may order to your own liking, specifying more or less wear, "chippy" or not so chippy, combinations of colors, "frosting" (where two shades of a color are blended into one another- a dark for highlights fading into a light shade on larger open areas, ala 1920s), as well as our own "Krackle-Koated" finish, a highly authentic crackled treatment using only natural materials (no weird chemicals). Other colors include colonial slate-gray, medium light gray, black, pale granny green, Victorian moss, seafoam, pale or canary yellow, barn red, baby blue, pink, coral, and French blue. Our colors are based on and inspired by actual paints and colors popularly used during historic periods. For instance, granny green, cream, and pale pink are commonly seen in the 1920s, whereas "Victorian moss" is just that- Victorian, from the 1870s-1890s. Black strongly resembled antiqued black laquer and was used in a variety of periods. We have owned and sold actual furniture from these periods in real original paint in these same colors, and we are well-known for highly authentic colors and effects. You won't find a better or more realistic painted restoration anywhere else! For samples of colors and effects, you may view or order a sample color pallet by clicking this link:
CONDITION: no major defects to the wood, does not need any structural repair. The finish is new in antiqued style/condition, and is non-toxic. All items sturdy and ready for use and display in the home, structurally intact. Needs no other repair or preparation prior to use. All necessary carpentry and hardware repairs are completed by professionals prior to painting.
