A link of 6 graduated size Chinese Fu or Foo Dogs carved out of and on an elephant tusk in the natural arc of the tusk. The littlest dog has a broken tail the piece is included. All but one has a ball in its' mouth which rolls freely. They have very sharp fangs and intricately carved coats. The tusk bottom has a carving of dogwood in blossom which has been handpainted with brown, pink,yellow, and green.The tusk sits upon a carved dark wood base with support to the arch and insets for each tusk end. There is illegible writing on the bottom. they structure weighs 13 ounces and measures 11L x 6T x 2W inches. From the 1940s is this Ivory elephant tusk carved into 6 parading elelphants in diminishing sizes with trunks laid on the preceedors back. 2 trunks have stress cracks. see photo. Striations in base tusk and end tusk point. Elephants intricately carved with striated creases of body and limbs. Tusk sits in cradle stand of dark carved wood. hand carved marks apparrent on tusk base.The Chinese foo Dog is from the Han Dynasty and is the protector of Buddha. The wealthy people of the era had the dog statues to protect their property and wealth.
