This ring contains a large natural (heated) blue Topaz, which is flanked on either side by natural deep blue Sapphires (September's birthstone). The center stone weighs 3.52 ct, and the setting is solid sterling silver. This size 6.5 ring is a perfect match for the pendant, found in a separate setting here!
Topaz is another unique material. It is plentiful (in comparison to other gems) and very versatile.
When mined, it is usually clear, white, or very pale in color.
It is often treated with a chemical vapor deposition, which permanently bonds a color treatment (such as Mystic Topaz) to the surface of the stone. The colors can be outstanding! But it should be remembered that it is a topical treatment, and the interior of the stone has not been altered.
In other cases, such as various shades of blue, the stone is actually heat treated to obtain that color! The more heat, the longer the duration, the deeper, richer color the end result will be. In this process, the entire stone is altered in color.
*SOME of the newer blue topaz gems have been topically treated (CVD) instead.*
My gems are "old, new inventory", purchased prior to the common use of CVD for Blue Topaz.
