Information from the book cover:
A nostalgic sense of place, a feeling for a changing America, an awareness of the effects of time passing-these are some of the themes in Donald Dodrill's paintings. With the touch of a poet, he presents his world in paint and in words, setting the perfect example for artists who want to describe their Own worlds in the transparent medium of watercolor. In nine series of paintings that include a diversified range of traditional subjects, the author brings to light the unique qualities of watercolor for rendering places and people he has known and cared about. First and foremost a watercolor painter, Dodrill depicts architecture, wildlife, figures, marine subjects, landscapes, cityscapes, even surrealistic and abstract images, remaining sensitive to the limits and possibilities of the materials he is working with.
Dodrill invites us to explore his terrain with him-to travel along the waterways of the rural Midwest to paint landscapes studded with sparkling lakes and rivers; to stroll along the Atlantic Coast, in Virginia and North Carolina, to paint boats wiled in mist and waves crashing or rippling along the shore; to visit cities where the effects of time, weather, and changing architecture present yet another set of problems for the artist.
Dodrill paints wintry country scenes characterized by salmon-tinted skies and oblique white light. There is also a more experimental side to his work. Through a series of abstract images, Dodrill examines motion, time, and space. In creating a final series of paintings, he simply plays with the natural flow of paint, thus freeing his imagination.
Indeed, no subject is outside Dodrill's artistic purview. The climate is warm here, whatever the weather; the country is friendlv: and the artist, Donald L. Dodrill, makes 'a fine companion on this visual journey.
