Recycle… Re-Use… Re-Invent…
In my opinion, buying a vintage or antique item is an easy way to do a little bit of good for the planet. Instead of cluttering it up with more “Made in China†chachkas, you can “recycle†something and actually own a little piece of history. It doesn’t matter what the item is or how valuable it is… that piece has lived through many lives and if it could talk, I’m sure it would have many interesting stories to tell. Just remember that a piece from the past belonged to someone’s mother or sister, father or brother and existed through times when life was much different, but in many ways still the same.
Buying a previously owned item of any age or genre is a great way to reuse instead of cluttering up the planet with more waste & garbage. No matter what you seek, someone somewhere is bound to have it or have too much of it. Get on the hunt! There are so many places to go to buy that aren’t “corporateâ€. Find the yard sales & auctions in your area. Check local papers for estate & yard sales. Go on-line! Post your wants & desires in free on-line classifieds. Google it! You’ll be amazed at what you can find for sale!
Open your eyes a little when you look at an item. Don’t see it for what it is, but rather what it could be. Take something & reinvent it… make it something new & unique. My favorite item that I “made†is a coffee table consisting of a pair of vintage brass coffin stands for a base (yeah, sounds creepy but it really isn’t) with a huge antique brass Indian tray for a top. I love antique saucers… no cups, just saucers… they are so beautiful & can be used for so many things other than their intended purpose. I use them for candle holders, drink & wine bottle coasters, dessert plates, small flower arrangements, underplates for bowls, cat food dishes, spoon rests.... you get the idea. I could go on & on! So go ahead, be creative! Put on those rose-colored glasses & see things in a new light!
