The Importance of Traits

Item traits are crucial in helping buyers find your listings.

Hi, Brianna here! I've just wrapped up my latest video to simplify the how and why of adding traits to your listings. Let's start with the why:

Imagine that you want to buy a pair of size 9 blue loafers. If you just type ‘women’s shoes’ into a search bar, you’ll get a couple hundred thousand results. At that point, you would narrow down those results by searching for specific item traits such as brand, color, size, and condition. These traits are what help shoppers find the item they’ve been dreaming of! 

At Bonanza, we use these traits - along with the category you select - to increase visibility for your items. When buyers are browsing through categories, they will be presented with the traits available for each category. They can then use these traits to narrow down their results.

When we send a seller's items to Google Shopping, we also use item traits where possible to match your item up with specific details that Google uses. Sending Google Shopping this extra info helps our sellers' items rank higher in search results.

There are two ways you can add item traits to your listings on Bonanza. You can add them while you are creating a new listing or you can use the batch edit tool. I've shown both methods in my latest video and I hope you can take a moment to watch it.

    I agree with the importance of item traits, unfortunately one of your vendors does not concur.
    The vendor spells out the total amount of product with the purchase, yet ships one-half that amount. On top of that, they’re not responding to my message to the seller.
    This is known in the industry as “Bait and switch”.
    If I don’t hear from the vendor by days end I shall contact the BBB and Federal Trade Commission.

    I don’t mean to be snarky, but this is really complicated and time consuming if you sell 100% unique items. It’s seems a very old school way to go about it.

    Hi forsythiahill! Thanks so much for asking about other ways to add traits. We appreciate the opportunity to explain how to add traits easily and quickly when you have all unique items. At the end of the video, Brianna shows how to use the batch edit tool to pull up your listings’ traits. In Batch Edit, select ALL of your listings. In the toolbox, click on Item Traits. Then click on “Edit Traits for all filtered items”. This will produce a list that includes all of your items along with the traits that apply to them. You can scroll through it and fill in all the traits you can. Then just save the changes at the bottom of the page. That’s it!     I’ve used item traits, using the variations when posting new items for years with no problems. Suddenly in May I realized that my variations were not posting correctly and have had to literally redo hundreds of listings as nobody there could tell me what happened and offer a solution. Your variations work great- when they work. I haven’t had the courage to check them again as if they are wrong again I will implode. I strongly suggest variations upon time of listing- work great if they do. l have also totally lost any idea on how to use the photo editor- the old one was great- can’t figure out the new one with the “grid”- fortunately don’t have to do often with our photos. So- YAY- TRAITS ARE SUPER IMPORTANT BUT ONLY IF THEY WORK CORRECTLY. Mine haven’t since May :-(

    Goodness that sounds like a real trial for you. Variations do work very well. I am not sure what happened on your particular listings though. Please get hold of support so we can take a look at that for you.

    The old photo editor had to be retired. The current editor has limited editing capabilities. It is often better to use software on your own computer to get your photos how you want them before uploading. That is what I do anyway Just a thought :)

    Thank you for the last explanation. I try to use traits when I can. One of the problems for sellers like me who sell collectibles and items without barcodes is Google does not recognize these items as they are not in their database of imported items.

    That is a great observation. The thing is “used” condition products are generally exempt from the UPC requirement. Notice “generally” cause sometimes Google shopping will get off kelter and want the UPC on even used condition products. But for the most part collectibles are vintage and are used so the UPC is not required.

    Just a suggestion for the future on traits. If Bonanza has a way to upload a .csv file, one or several of the columns could be used to specify the item traits (within reason from a drop down list for each trait specific) and this may alleviate much of the complaints on not working or not having the correct information for Google. Another option is that you list on ebay first and bring it over to Bonanza That works pretty good for our part traits, not sure about all categories though. Until Bonanza comes up with a better way, which based on experience, I’m sure they will, this is a good way to get your additional information out there on a smaller scale.     Hi Brian! Thanks for adding your suggestions. We do have a CSV import tool, you can see how it works here: https://support.bonanza.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000656491-How-do-I-import-items-from-an-existing-inventory-CSV-file-
    You can add traits via a CSV file, but only if your items were added to your booth via that CSV file. We aren’t able to edit traits on items imported from eBay with a CSV file.
    Importing from eBay will bring over all the traits you have listed there, as per your comment. If you add more traits to your existing eBay items, you can import them to Bonanza by selecting “Import new and revised items” on the import page.

    Hello, I do agree that item traits are very important. However, the way you display the traits in the stores is quite unusual for me.
    In other webstores one can pick traits separately, not the way you display them.
    For example, if I want to sell items in 10 colors and 10 sizes, on other websites I enter 10 colors and 10 sizes. On your website I need to enter 100 combinations of sizes and colors instead.
    That would be quite a chore to do so for me as a seller and also uncomfortable for the customer to scroll down 100 entries in a dropdown, witout touching the wrong item.
    Moreover, in the google feed, the traits do appear separately as sizes and colors, wile on the website you display size&color. I don’t think it is a good thing to have different data in the feed and in the store.
    I wish you had a trait sytem like the rest of the world.

    Thank you for taking the time to post on the blog. I am sorry to hear the variations set up is not working well for your particular business model. Making things hard is certainly not the end goal.

    Since the current variation set up does not work well for you, something that might be considered is to create a listing for each color and then only add the size. While there would be 10 listings (One listing for each color) at least the sizes could be selected for the color. I realize that may not be the most desired solution but that would at least get you to closer what you are wanting.

    In the meantime, we will be sure to share your thoughts with the developers.

    I’m not certain, but adding an editor with less functionality over one that works and suggesting using a 3rd party editor for a highly picture dependent website seems odd to me.

    HI Cardz,

    Thank you for commenting. Please allow me to clarify.

    The old editor was retired due to issues that could not be resolved. The old editor was just not working any more.

    The new editor although has limited editing it does work with the platform easily. If a seller needs more complex editing, then a different editor will be the best solution.

    Helpful info! I’m using sellersourcebook to list to Bonanza and even if I fill out the traits most of them don’t actually seem to post. So I’m going to contact them to see if that can be fixed since it sounds like it’s important.
