Item description

Buried Treasures of the Appalachians Buried Treasures of the Appalachians Legends of Homestead Caches, Indian Mines, and Loot from Civil War Raids As the Civil War ended, the Confederate Treasury was smuggled out of Richmond. By the time it reached Washington, Gorgia two months later, it had shrunk from 1 million to 288,000. What happened to the rest? In 1964 a stone marker moved by vandals was given to researchers at the University of Georgia, who recognized in its carvings directions to a wealth of gold buried along the Savannah River by the Red Bank Cherokee in 1835. The direction, though, were only useful in reference to the marker's original location - which was by that time unknown. A cedar chest packed with gold coins robbed from a bank just south of Lexington, Kentucky was found fifty years later in King's Mill Pond by a fishing guide. Much of the chest had rotted away, and only a handful of coins was left in it. Are the rest still sunk in the silt of the pond? The Appalachian Mountains have seen untopld fortunes gained and lost. The confluences and clashes of cultures - Indian, Spanish, French, pioneer, Union and Confederate forces - produced struggles over wealth, and gold and silver were often cachede for later retrieval. This book tells forty of those stories. W.C. Jameson gathered the books, material from historic journals, maps, on-site research in the mountains, and interviews with people whose lives have been entwined with the legends about the searches for these fabulous lost treasures. These and many more true accounts of lost and buried treasures along the Appalachians covering Alabama,Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. This is a must have volume for anyone living in or visiting the Appalachian Mountains.
