Good As I Been To You

'In the early 1990's, Bob Dylan unexpectedly delivered a record of folk songs, his first straight covers album ever, not to mention his first guitar, harmonica, and voice record since the early '60's. That alone would make it an anomaly, but Good As I Been To You is more than that, because it's a really good traditional folk album, having just enough familiar tunes - "Frankie and Albert," "Blackjack Davey," "Sitting on Top of the World," "Froggie Went A-Courtin'" - to provide an entryway to the less familiar numbers, which are delivered equally well. Yes, this could be seen as a rather unassuming record, but that's what's special about it. In 1992, not even folksingers were working with this material, but Dylan did, reviving folk's (and rock's) ties to the past at an unexpected time and with unexpectedly strong results and a definite minor high point in his catalog...'

Time Out of Mind

'After spending much of the '90s touring and simply not writing songs, Bob Dylan returned in 1997 with Time Out of Mind, his first collection of new material in seven years, and this is a carefully considered set of songs, with densely detailed subject matter and dark, atmospheric production. Daniel Lanois bathes them in hazy, ominous sounds, which may suit the spirit of the lyrics, but are often in opposition to Dylan's performances. Consequently, the album loses a little of its emotional impact, yet, nontheless, the songs themselves are uniformly powerful, adding up to Dylan's best overall collection in years. Ultimately, the songs retain their power, leaving Time Out of Mind as one of the rare latter-day Dylan albums that meets his high standards...'
