Measures 5-5/8" X 8-3/32", 248+ pp, written by Roy J. Snell, b&w interior illustrations by HENRY E. VALLELY, hardcover with dust jacket published by Whitman Publishing Co. (WI), Whitman Authorized Edition #2389.

Originally, THE PHANTOM VIOLIN by Roy J. Snell had been published in 1934 by another publisher, Reilly & Lee Co. -- but with no mention or even hint of JANE WITHERS.  Come 1943, however, and Whitman Publishing Co. reprinted the novel, needing only to switch the name of Hollywood actress JANE WITHERS, for that of one of the book's original characters.  This copy includes some tantalizing hints as to its edition age:  the rear cover does not list ANY titles from beyond 1943, as do the lists on the end pages. The front & rear flyleaves feature not only pre-1940 titles, but also the three "comic book related" titles by GAYLORD DUBOIS & OSKAR LEBECK, as does one of the lists on the end pages.  So I'm going to go out on a very thin and perilous limb, and suggest that this copy is definitely a 1943 first edition, possibly published as early as late 1942.
