Ray Ellis
Hell Gate

Original book plate (not scanned and reproduced)
 rescued from a collection of Ellis' paintings celebrating the American Northeast Coast published in 1986.
This particular work depicts a scene from New York, New York.
The original watercolor was painted in 1984, and is sized 9 1/2 x 13 1/2.

Ray Ellis (1921-2013) painted for over 70 years. Born in Philadelphia, he attended the Philadelphia museum school of art. He painted in his spare time until 1969, when he devoted all his time to his art. In the 80's he collaborated with Walter Cronkite on a series of fine art books celebrating the nation's coastlines. For 3 consecutive years he was commissioned by the president to paint scenes of the White House for the official Christmas card. His paintings reside in the permanent collection of the White House, museums across the country, and private collections worldwide.

This plate is in excellent condition, on medium-weight paper.
plate size: 12 X 14 7/8 inches
printed area: 9 5/8 X 13 11/16 inches
My scanner is 9X12, so the edges of the plate are not shown
(the two thumbnail images show more of each side);
there is a nice border all around,
underneath is printed "18. Hell Gate.",
lower is the image name that was on the facing page, and a page number in the corner.
The back side has text, but nothing shows through.

Highly suitable for framing!
