COVER: All About IMPEACHMENT.

TOP OF THE WEEK:
SYLLABUS: It was still an unsettling voyage into the unknown--a spectacle that hadn't happened in the 105 years since Rep. Thaddeus Stevens summed up to the House the case for the removal of President Andrew Johnson (cover). But now America again was considering the impeachment of a President. General Editors David M. Alpern and Richard M. Smith review the precedents, procedures and prospects for the case against Richard Nixon. (Cover print Courtesy of Kenneth M. Newman, The Old Print Shop. New York City. Color by Al Gianni.).

SADAT SPEAKS OUT: In his desert retreat at the oasis of Borg el Arab, Egyptian President ANWAR SADAT granted a two.hour interview last week to Newsweek's Arnaud de Borchgrave--the first long talk Sadat has had with an American correspondent since last Octo. ber's war. It was de Borchgrave's sixth interview with the Egyptian President, and this time Sadat was remarkably optimistic about the chances for peace in the Middle East.

NEW X-RAY: Ordinary X-rays have long been an invaluable diagnostic tool, but now researchers have devised an even better-- and safer--one: it is called XRG and provides a much more detailed picture of the inside of the body.

PUBLIC SAVIORS: Is there truly such a thing as the public interest? If so, who serves it and why? Newsweek bureaus talked with a range of public-interest activists for Ideas editor Richard Boeth's analysis.

FAIRYLAND: In a setting that seemed part Disneyland, part Arabian Nights, 300 jet.set pets christened Mexico's most lavish new resort last week. Linda Francke (above, left) was on hand to observe the players and their games.

A SAD, SAD SONG: For the last time, the Grand Ole Opry went on in Nashville's Ryman Auditorium and then decamped to comfy but soulless new quarters in Opryland. Pete Axthelm reports on the rites of passage.
