This original vintage print is in fine condition and was salvaged from a by subscription only uncommon volume of Christianity oriented steel engravings. Published in 1899, the volume was found to have wonderful steel engravings with artwork by various steel engravers, notably including the Christian comic & cartooning pioneer, Frank Beard. On closer review of the steel engravings, some appear to be signed by the artist. These puzzles were work of various artists and the possible engravers signatures found (some hidden or near the images) were as follows: M. Baker; the initials "TE" with possibly an open circle over the letter T) found with some of the drawings of fowl or birds; the initials "AD" found with some scenic cityscape engravings.

The 1820s - 1840s was the last great age for line engraving, with many superb works of art being produced by now almost forgotten engravers. Steel allowed line engraving to be pushed to extreme limits, with prints being produced in which it is only possible to distinguish the individual lines with a magnifying glass. Needless to say, our provided images do not do these engravings justice!

"The plan of Picture Puzzles - the cornerstones of Christianity - from both the Old and New Testaments, are put in beautiful pictures, hence the eye assists the mind to indelibly impress them upon the heart. ... some of the best men and women who have ever lived were those who, when they were quite young and not able to speak plainly, used to talk about it by day, and think, and even dream, of it by night ... In the hope that PICTURE PUZZLES will stimulate young and old to "search the Scripture ..." Foreword [ed] from the Publishers

About FRANK BEARD.
Born in 1842, Frank Beard grew to become a widely known American illustrator, "chalk talk" artist, and cartoonist in the late 19th century. Beard's first published work as an illustrator may have appeared in Comic Monthly, published from 1859 to 1881. Beard drew both single panel cartoons and sequential art (comics). Around 1893 he began illustrating for The Ram's Horn, a non-denominational Christian periodical published during the 1890s and early 1900s by a Chicago, Illinois publishing house. Eventually Beard became the magazine's principal illustrator, drawing both covers and interior illustrations. Beard died in 1905.
