Mid 19th Century Anitque Natural History Wood Engraving
STAG BEETLE & LONGICORN BEETLE
(Lucanus cervus) & (Xenocerus semiluctuosus). Natural History Wood Engraving.
Mid 19th Century Print

This wonderfully detailed print was salvaged from a mid 19th Century edition of an Illustrated Natural History by REV. JOHN GEORGE WOOD [1827-1899]. Published by George Routledge and Sons, London in the mid 1800s. The book included engravings by G. Mitzel, Robert Kretschmer, K. K Tahrmangh, Roth, Kellen, R. Illner, J. Mutzel, among others.

This is a full page illustrated fine line engraving. It is an actual PLATE from the book and there is no printing present on the back of the page. This antique wood engraving is over 140 years old and finely detailed. This is the actual authentic antique engraving from the book, not a modern copy or reproduction. Heavy stock paper. Plate has age toning along the page edges. Does not extend into the image area. Each page has the title of the image printed at the bottom of the PLATE.

The engraving is signed by SCHMIDT (bottom left) and W. AARLAND (bottom right). This interesting image is of a three beetle near a nest with a pupa. There is a lot of of depth in this engraving, showing a wonderful flurry of detailed beetles that are finely displayed in a fine woodland grove.

Full page dimensions: 10 oe " x 8 " Image dimensions: 7 7/8 " x 5 1/8 "

Rev. Wood's zoology books contain some of the finest animal engravings of the 19th Century. Many are of the images in his books were duplicates of wood engravings from other European zoology publications of the period. His American work, Animate Creation, published in the late 1880s contributed substantially to the growth of popular zoology education in America.
