PAUL AND VIRGINIA by Bernardin De Saint Pierre

Porter & Coates, Philadelphia, 1891

Condition: Close to Near Fine

This novel, first published in 1787, concerns two lifetime friends who fall in love. It is perhaps most notable for its early arguments for the emancipation of slaves.  This is the Altas Edition from the notable 19th century American reprint publisher, Porter & Coates.  They only pubished under this name until 1895; the original owner's name and the date "Dec. 1891" are written on a blank page of this copy. (His private library label is on the front paste-down.)  I have other books originally owned by his family, and they generally  took excellent care of them.  This copy has slight cover corner wear and light spine end wear; otherwise, a bright, unfaded exterior.   The back pastedown is lightly torn near the hinge but doesn't affect it, and there is also some page toning;  otherwise,  the interior is excellent.  (It might as well have never been read).   This book is uncommon in this edition, but rare in this condition.
