?THE MIRA TAKLA TRAGEDY. Cairo-

?born Egyptian Parliamentarian and

?Egyptologist Mira Takla created the

?perfume “Vallee des Rois” (Valley of

?the Kings) in 1988 after translating

?heiroglyphic perfume formulas from

?temple walls at Edfu, Dendera and Philae. Her wish to cast a light on the

?opulence and genius of ancient

?Egyptian dynasties resulted in this

?perfume which was sold exclusively

?through Harrods in London and

?Galleries Lafayette in Paris. However,

?its commercial life was short lived.

?Takla spent $1.3M on organising a

?titanic PR event for the ‘Vallee des

?Rois’ launch; inviting 30 renowned

?beauty and fashion journalists from

?the UK on a 5 night adventure staying

?at the celubrious Heliopolis Sheraton

?Hotel northeast of Cairo. Takla spent

?months planning a luxury cruise

?down the Nile from Luxor to Aswan,

?where - on an island in the middle of

?the Nile - bottles of perfume had

?been hidden in the bullrushes for

?the visiting beauty writers to

?discover. The press jaunt was set to

?culminate in a lavish banquet in the

?Aida ballroom of the Marriot Hotel in

?Cairo. Guests at the dinner were to be

?showered with gifts at the event,

?including the sumptuously packaged

?perfume. These plans, however, never came to fruition. Just 4 hours after

?checking into the Heliopolis Sheraton

?Hotel, embers from an outdoor open-

?air fire pit ignited a canopy swathed

?in fabric. With gusting desert winds

?that fanned the flames, the entire

?Hotel soon caught alight, and flames

?lapped from windows on every floor.

?In an era devoid of smoke detectors

?and sprinkler systems, pandemonium

?broke out as hotel guests fled for

?their lives; the entire hotel now

?ablaze. Tragically, when the flames

?were finally quashed, 19 people had

?perished, including 3 journalists from

?Takla’s party. The lives of the three

?journalists, the hundreds of

?thousands of pounds worth of lost

?possessions and the investment of

?more than $3 million dollars in the

?perfume by Mira Takla meant that the

?launch of the fragrance was also

?quashed, and the scent never

?reached its full commercial potential

?before being retired shortly after.

?Bottles of “Vallee des Rois” are scant

?and command stratospheric prices
