Description: A nice larger size glazed and nicely decorated redware whimsical bird figurine made by James C Seagreaves. This brown colored bird with yellow and blue wings having black highlights, has a yellow beak and yellow eyes with black centers. The bird is standing on a brown oval base with a brown column supporting its body and showing black colored feet or toes. The bird figurine has a fan-shaped hollow compartment on its back (on top) decorated with a yellow star surrounded by yellow dots on one side and a green colored tulip on the other side. The entire piece has raised designs outlining the feathers in the wings, the legs, the feet, the tulip on the fan -shaped compartment on the bird's back and the star on the opposite side of the compartment. The base has a toothed design all along the sides. The base of the piece is marked on the underside "JCS." The head of the bird is tilted sideways with black dots on top. The piece is hollow but has raised details throughout. A beautiful piece of modern folk art redware to add to your collection. Date: Uncertain but most likely sometime in the period 1950-1970. 

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in southeastern Pennsylvania. 

Size: The base measures ~3 3/4" by ~2 1/2", while the bird itself is ~7" at its longest, is ~3 1/4" at its widest, and ~8 1/2" at its highest. The piece weighs slightly over 1 pound and 2 ounces. 

Maker: James Christian Seagreaves. 

Marks: Marked "JCS" on bottom in cursive calligraphy. 

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful piece of contemporary folk art pottery made by a master potter. A beautiful piece, which deserves a prominent spot in your redware or folk-art pottery collection. 

Condition: The bird is in very good condition with no cracks, repairs, chips, or hairlines. The piece has general crazing to the glaze, which truly does not affect the quality or beauty of the piece and is expected in a primitive piece such as this. There is some soiling and remnants of a label on the bottom of the base. Other than that, this is a great looking bird in excellent condition to add to your collection.
