The film tells the story of Elliot, a boy who befriends an extraterrestrial dubbed E.T., who is stranded on Earth. Along with his friends and family, Elliot must find a way to help E.T. return home while avoiding the government. During the film, Elliot's younger sister, Gertie, gifts E.T. with a flower pot of wilted geraniums, which the extraterrestrial brings back to life. These geraniums are actually a key part of the film and seem to be connected to E.T.'s health, and ultimately symbolise life and ressurrection.
In the emotional closing scene of the film, E.T. says his goodbyes to Elliot and his family. "I'll be right here", he tells Elliot in the iconic scene and gently places his lit-up finger on the boy's forehead. The two part ways, and the pot of fully-bloome
