John Howard Lawson was the co-founder and first President of the Screen Writers Guild. However, he was one of the 'Hollywood Ten' who fell foul of the House of Un-American Activities Committee by claiming the 1st Ammendment and refusing to answer questions. Lawson was found guilty of contempt by Congress and sentenced to 12 months in Ashland Prison and fined $1,000.
