Thorns were a symbol of a curse. When Adam and Eve sinned, bringing evil and a curse upon the world, part of the curse upon humanity was, "Cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you..."

The Crown of Thorns was a wreath of thorns placed on the head of Jesus Christ during his crucifixion. Jesus took upon Himself our pain and suffering. Every curse that was supposed to fall on our heads fell on Jesus' head, symbolized by the crown of thorns. He wore this crown so that we can have peace of mind, wear the crown of glory, and receive His righteousness and all its benefits.

The Crown of Thorns is a crown of contradiction, representing cruelty and compassion, ridicule and redemption, bestial hatred and Heaven's highest love, punishment and the forgiveness of sin. It was a crown of death, yet for hundreds of millions, it has helped to create a crown of life. This peerless diadem, recognized by thousands as they revere the love that bore it, is THE CROWN OF THORNS laid upon the head of the world's Redeemer in the depths of His suffering, as Saint John writes.
