This is a lovely vintage decorative handmade lacquered paper or papier mache trinket box, with an all over floral design. There are striped fans on the sides. It is marked on the bottom "Made in India" and N.M. - 64 (I believe that is the year it was made). Papier-mache is French for chewed paper. It is a composite material consisting of paper, pulp, textiles and bound with an adhesive. These were commonly made in the Kashmir Valley of India. The lidded box measures approximately 3 inches in diameter and is just over 1 ½ inches deep. The side is notched to keep the lid in the proper position (see photo). It is painted in shades of black, red, coral, pink, yellow and turquoise blue.

It is in very good vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. There are no cracks or breaks although there is some minor black color loss along the edge of the lid, easily touched up. The interior and base have a great shiny black lacquer finish.

This box will make a nice addition to your trinket box or ethnic collection. It is also great to give with a special jewelry gift inside.
