SHOELACES rules of the road
most often, use a thin waxed dress lace in a true dress shoe, usually round, sometimes flat,
your shoe manufacturer ALWAYS knows best,
(cordo hyde, neohyde and dawhyde brands are the gold standard for round waxed dress laces) 
this gentlemans detail is often overlooked, a clear indicator your lack training.
for a casual shoe, use a casual round lace, often a cord style, or casual flat lace, thicker = more casual, thinner or shiny, lean toward dressy, more refined.
 example..... bass suede dirty bucs nearly demand an unwaxed round style synthetic blend lace. the lace here should never shine.
the bass buc was formerly shipped with a fuzzier, all cotton, cord style lace. they broke and broke and broke.
now the dirty suede buc ships with a cotton/poly lace, stronger and a bit more refined, a bit dressier.
IF you were true to form, you MAY prefer the older style, fuzzy, all cotton lace in your bucs. less polished, more classic, more preppy.
you may bend the rules a bit more with casual shoes, opting for colored laces, etc
