How Do Antioxidants Like SOD Work?

Antioxidants “quench” free radicals—compounds that cause unwanted cellular reactions. But how do they do it? Certain processes in your body naturally produce free radicals: the compound called “superoxide,” for instance. SOD (superoxide dismutase) breaks down superoxide before it can cause cellular stress. Another potent antioxidant, glutathione, further “quenches” the remaining compounds SOD leaves behind.

The body makes its own antioxidant enzymes: glutathione, catalase and importantly, superoxide dismutase. This powerhouse antioxidant helps protect your cells from cellular stress caused by free radicals. Cellular stress can increase the process of natural aging—and levels of superoxide dismutase production have been shown to decrease with age. That’s why we created our dual-ingredient SOD Booster formula.

Chokeberry (A. melanocarpa) Extract

Chokeberries have one of nature’s highest polyphenol counts—greater even than blueberries. Specifically, chokeberries are packed with polyphenol compounds called anthocyanins. Why does this matter? Because chokeberry anthocyanins promote SOD production.

During a two-month study, participants were given 300 mg of the same chokeberry extract in SOD Booster every day. By study’s end, supplementation resulted in a 29% increase in superoxide dismutase. Interestingly, levels of glutathione—another powerful antioxidant—increased as well.

Extramel® melon pulp concentrate

Extramel® is a concentrate of a special variety of a French melon. This melon has a long shelf-life, theorized to be in part because of high SOD activity (and therefore cellular longevity) in the living fruit.
