It Shouldn't Happen to a Dog Colin Watson Book Club Edition Hardcover Book 1977

Julia Harton is married to a rising pet food executive, but he refuses to pay her alimony. She becomes involved in 'Happy Endings Inc, ' an imaginary company whose proprietor proposes to blackmail Julia's husband. When Julia disappears, Inspector Purbright must delve deep to find the truth about the town's mysteries.

Policewoman Susan Carstairs, of the Los Angeles Police Department, was very cross with herself for worrying about her lipstick and looking starry-eyed just because Sergeant Maddox, also of the Los Angeles police, had asked her help on a case. Why should she care about how she looked for Maddox? Just because almost every woman who saw Maddox found him very attractive was no reason why a sensible policewoman like Susan should. No reason at all. The case Maddox wanted help on was the disappearance of a teen-age  girl – thirteen, but she looked older, said her mother, Mrs. Beal. A sluttish Mrs. Beal, who hadn't paid much attention to her daughter when she was around, and who hadn't reported her disappearance from home (such as it was) for days.

That was the first case. There were others: an elderly woman disappeared, a youngish man was found dead at the wheel of his parked car, and then there was a series of killings – in a candy store, a gas station-holdups, with the unresisting victims killed senselessly. Was it someone killing just for the pleasure of it?

Sergeant Maddox and Detective D'Arcy-and Policewoman Carstairsfelt they had almost more than they could handle. But they were a skillful team. And this new report of their activities will delight its readers.
