These old Early American Pattern Glass bowl were made around the 1850-1880s, possibly by the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company. They have not been positively attributed to a specific glass company. To me they seem to have details similar to known B&S pieces, but they are not in the EAPG database for Boston & Sandwich, and since they cannot be guaranteed as to maker, they've been put in the "AKA Loop" catagory. They are flint glass, and have a nice tone. The pattern is aka Loop, Elongated Loop, or possibly Leaf. Both are the same pattern, being sold individually.
Smaller bowl (8 1/2 inches in diameter):
- The bowl is 8 3/8 inches wide and 2 1/4 inches tall. There are seven "loops" around the bowl, and they end in rounded feet on the bottom of the bowl. The bowl weighs 1 pound 4 ounces.
- There is a concave, polished smooth indent in the bottom, not exactly in the center, which looks like a polished pontil. There are 3 small irregularities around that area (straw marks), and one of them has a tiny chip. There also is a small inclusion in the glass of the bottom; and one 2" long straw mark inside the bowl. (What looks like a second inclusion in my last photo is a piece of lint that got under the bowl when I was taking pictures.)
- There is one flake shaped chip on the rim of the bowl, between two of the "loops," which is 3/8 inch long by 1/4 inch wide, and it feels sharp on the edge. In the same place on the opposite side of the bowl there is a tiny chip 1/8" wide. (These chips can be felt, but aren't noticeable visually.) Other than the usual wear on the feet and some use scratches inside, there is no other damage.
Larger Bowl (9 1/2 inches in diameter):
- The bowl is 9 1/2 inches wide and 3 inches tall. There are seven "loops" around the bowl, and they end in rounded feet on the bottom of the bowl. The bowl weighs 2 pounds 2 ounces.
- There is a concave, polished smooth indent in the bottom, not exactly round, which looks like a polished pontil. There are 2 small bruise-like chips in the edge of the pontil area. One is about 3/16" and the other is 1/8" There is a tiny, grain of sand inclusion in one of the panels. There are no other chips. There is the usual wear on the feet, and light wear inside the bowl.
