Next to Ronson, USA, IMCO is the oldest existing lighter manufacturer in the world. In 1907 Julius Meister founded the Austrian button and metal goods factory Julius Meister & Co. in Vienna. IMCO was formed from the initials. Buttons for military use were mainly produced. After the First World War, the demand for lighters ended and so IMCO switched to the production of lighters from 1918, initially from spent cartridge cases. The shapes of the early IMCO lighters still show the original shape of the cartridge. The first IMCO lighter was developed in 1918-1919 and in 1922 the first patent no. 89538 was registered. Since then, around 70 different lighters have been developed and marketed worldwide. At the beginning of the 20th At the end of the 19th century, the Austrian lighter industry was a leader because the flint (''Auermet'') was also invented by the Austrian Auer von Welsbach. Unfortunately, only two of the countless companies ensure Austrian quality in the industry today. The best-known Imco lighter is the petrol lighterTRIPLEX Great, which was developed in 1936, technically improved in the 1950s and is still produced today without any changes. In the mid-1950s, the line of petrol lighters was expanded to include the Junior and Streamline models. The legendary and classic design combined with 100% reliability have made the three lighters a global success. Production was relocated from Vienna to Tribuswinkel near Baden in the 1960s because of the start of production of spark wheel and piezo plastic lighters with gas. IMCO has particularly established itself on the market with slanted flame lighters for pipe smokers. In recent years, a successful line of high-quality and unusual designer lighters and stick lighters has also been developed. To date, IMCO has produced and sold over half a billion lighters worldwide. The company IMCO Österreichische Feuerzeug- und Metallwarenfabrik GmbH has been closed since June 2012, and now paper clips are sold from the closed company.
