It is a single playing card from a children's card game called Jovial Families. Each card is a lithograph in bright colors that has high quality hand colored detailing. Each card have a distinct personality, as do all of our family members! There are 40 cards in total - 10 "families" with 4 people to each. Unfortunately, our card deck is incomplete - you can say that we're not playing with a full deck -- so the individual or a group of cards are perfect for framing, greeting card embellishments, altered books, calling cards, gag gifts or any number of artistic uses. DIMENSIONS ~ 3 5/8 " x 2 1/2 " CONDITION ~ EXCELLENT. The image is very crisp and clear and the card has light smudges. Edges are all softly bumped. Printed on back in blue with logo design of the A. Collier Company (London. est 1863). This card from the deck is in remarkable condition for a children's game and collectible ephemera that is over 100 years old. ABOUT Jovial Families Playing Cards by A Collier London ~ The A. Collier Company of London was established in 1863 and produced a card game called Jovial Families which was produced around the turn of the 20th century, between 1890 and 1910. The characters of Jovial Familiesare remenicent of the popular 1860 card game produced by a well known 19th century maker & publisher of games, John Jaques & Son Limited of Kirbt Street, London, EC1. The game was called Happy Families which had the original characters that were based on or drawn by Sir John Tenniel, who was best known for his illustrations of the Alice in Wonderland books by Lewis Carroll. These artistic parallels can be seen in the comical (and sometimes grotesque) characters of the Jovial Families. How do you play? Four game players get ten shuffled cards each. The aim is to collect complete sets by requesting cards from the other players. Either one receives or forfeits a card on each turn. A player's turn lasts for as long as they are receiving cards. The winner is the person who collects the most sets. The names of the Jovial families are: Goldfinder - Banker, Scaley - Fishmonger, Cowhide - Milkman, Duckseye - Poulterer (brit. a dealer in poultry and game), Frogswool - Artist, Shiner - Hatter, Nobleshot - Farmer, Plumstone - Grocer (brit. also called purveyor), Trufitt - Tailor & the Cutbush Family - Gardener "CHILDREN'S CARD GAMES have been somewhat neglected in the past, which make them a valuable collectible of the future. Antique and vintage children's card games used to be produced to very high quality, both in the materials used and the design and printing. Cards specifically designed for the amusement and education of children did not appear until the second half of the 18th century. The early children's card games tended to have pictorial themes rather than the numerical format we are familiar with today. A huge variety of card games has been devised over the years, the best known of which are Happy Families or Quartet games which involve completing sets of cards and declaring these to win the game. However, cards have also been used to tell fairy tales, ask and answer questions, illustrated nature, animals, places, to teach foreign languages, to foster early learning with numbers, spelling, currency, telling the time, and so on.
