(A little) ABOUT ROLLING PINS "Early American wooden rolling pins were commonly made from pine; however, in the 1800s, manufacturers started using oak, cherry, mahogany, sycamore, apple wood, beech, walnut and maple hardwoods as the pine forests dwindled. In the mid-1900s, the rolling pins were hollowed out and a steel rod inserted with handles at each end made from the same wood. These handles were usually painted. Solid hardwood rolling pins from France were long, thick in the middle, with tapered ends -- their heavy weight allowed easier rolling and maneuverability of the dough. Length and weight of common wooden rolling pins: Mini-rolling pins come in 5 – 7 inch models. Regular size rolling pins were made at 12, 15, and 18 inches, and the big 18-inch ones weighed as much as 12 lbs." --SWK Knob-ended rolling pins preceded those with the handles carved in one piece with the roller. These utensils were usually homemade until they began to be factory produced in the mid-19th century.
