This same brooch in a different color can be found on page 158 of the “Warman's Costume Jewelry Figurals Identification and Price Guide” 2007 by Kathy Flood. It is titled Rhumba Dancer Pin and was originally made as part of a set with a matching woman dancer. It is a gold-plated metal with enamel orange or honey gold shirt and pants and a reddish orange hat or sombrero. It has rhinestone accents on the belt, the hat and the pants. It measures approximately 1 3/4 inches by 2 inches. This type of dance was a Cuban folk dance that became popular in the early 20th Century. The brooch could also represent a Flamenco or Mariachi dancer, but I am using the term in the book for the description.
It is in nice vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. The enamel looks like it was applied slightly unevenly around the top of the hat on one side, and there is a tiny black dot that seems to be missing enamel on the hat. The gold on the top of the hat was repainted by my Mother, as was the gold finish on the chest (see arrows in picture). All the rhinestones are in place, they have slightly yellowed from age and one of the four stones in the hat looks a little different (smaller) than the other three. It is possible it was replaced in the past. They still have a nice sparkle. The pin on the back has a slight bend to it, but it closes easily. The rollover clasp piece that rolls seems to roll too easily, but it closes, and the C clasp works just fine. The price of this brooch reflects any defects. When wearing the brooch you don't see the back where the hat was repainted and you don't notice the chest. Please look carefully at the pictures as they are part of the description and show the details better than I can describe.
This will make a great addition to your collection of vintage costume jewelry. Great for any ballroom dancer or figural pin collector.
