Hand Carved Ebony Wood Female Figurine African Folk Art 16"

While my African Art collection , which is mainly traditional art produced for a utilitarian purpose and not for tourists or for the sake of art, it does include contemporary pieces of what is called "tourist or airport art" (traditional style to contemporary taste made for sale to tourists). That is not to say that such pieces are not well done or undeserving, but I want to be clear that to simply call a piece like this "African Art" can be confusing and deceptive.

I don't recall where I acquired this but I do remember that I thought it was a rendering of the Virgin Mary; the serenity of the face, in particular, attracted me.

As for provenance, I suspect it was covered in Tanganyika, Kenya or at least in Eastern Africa. It stands 16 1/8 inches and carved in an ebony wood; the figure arises from a base that is 3 1/4 inches. A wonderful display piece. Excellent condition.
