16 FEET LONG! Ink on Silk with Hand Coloring

The Spring Festival Along the River, original by Zhang Zeduan of the North Song Dynasty. This painting is considered one of the most valuable in Chinese art history for its high level of technical quality and the liveliness with which it portrays the myriad details of urban life. It is generally interpreted as portraying the city environs of Kaifeng, the Northern Song capital, and some of the surrounding countryside. Handscrolls of Chinese Painting are traditionally viewed from right to left.

About Zhang Zeduan(___)

Zhang Zeduan (Traditional Chinese: ___; Simplified Chinese: ___; Hanyu Pinyin: Zh_ng Z_du_n; Wade-Giles: Chang Tse-tuan) (1085-1145 AD), alias Zheng Dao, was a famous Chinese painter during the twelfth century, during the transitional period from the Northern Song to the Southern Song Dynasty. He was a native of Dongwu (present Zhucheng, Shandong). There is evidence that he was a court painter of the Northern Song Dynasty, and that in the aftermath of that dynasty's fall, his paintings were criticisms of the new dynasty. Most of what is known about Zhang Zeduan's life comes from a colophon written in 1186 by a man named Zhang Zhu.

Zhang Zeduan's most famous painting is Along the River During Ching Ming Festival, a wide handscroll which depicts life in a city. A popular remake of the painting was made in the 18th century, during the Qing Dynasty.

This Piece:

The bound sides, borders is also a dark brown brocade Silk (woven -under magnification) fabric. Backing of artwork is a layer of cream colored silk or parchment, perhaps rice paper, but heavy. This is not a modern reproduction. The attention to detail and the fabric, mounting wood and metal loop are all very old.

This is hand painted!! This is not my area of expertise and, of course, can't read the characters, so please ask for close up pictures if you are genuinely interested, so you can make a determination as to its true worht to you. this is guaranted to be the scroll that is pictured and guaranteed to be over a 100 years old. the detail is just mind boggling, i cant imagine the number of hours it took to hand draw this many many many years ago!! the pictures do not do this peice justice!! this is a very old piece the backing of the fabric is mottled with age and a little bit warped but still in good condition for the age.

Wood ends with original metal loop for tie, both OLD. Tie is not original but metal loop is original. 16 Feet Long!!! x 12 Inches in Width.
