ARTWORK BY LE MAIR!

Antique "Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat, Where Have you Been?" Nursery Rhyme Print

This is an exquisitely detailed color plate of the early works by Dutch children's illustrator, Henriette Willebeek Le Mair. This image was salvaged from a First Edition, First Printing of her 1911 nursery rhyme song book. This classic illustration is rendered in softly muted, understated pastel colors and placed within 2 large panels designed like intertwine ovals with a floral border. The 1911 book consisted of 30 nursery rhymes with the music and on each opposite page and epitomizes Le Mair's sophisticated stylings. This image is our personal favorite.

This beautiful antique lithograph was printed in the Great Britain by EDMUND EVANS, renown English wood engraver and printer of works by Kate Greenaway (b.1846 - d.1901), Randolph Caldecott (b.1846 - d. 1886), and tutor to Walter Crane (b.1845 - d.1915). These named artists were considered the strongest developers and contributors to the genre of English children's illustrated literature in the latter 19th century. Henriette Willebeek Le Mair was among them.

Medium stock paper. Printing on the back (does not distract from the image). Binding seam edge is present. Corners and page edges are bumped with turning creases and finger smudges along the bottom and right edges that do not effect the image. Tiny scuff within the image near the bottom of the fireplace. Bright, crisp image with light age toning on edges of page.

ABOUT Henriette Willebeek Le Mair [Dutch. Children's Illustrator. b.23 Apr 1889 - d. 1966]
Henriette Willebeek Le Mair was born in Rotterdam, Holland, 1889, Henriette's family always encouraged creativity. Her father liked to sketch and would often draw pictures for the children and tell them stories. Her mother liked spent a lot of her time painting and writing verse.

Le Mair began publishing at quite a young age. Her first book, Premieres Rondes Enfantines (1904), was published in France when she was just 15 years old. She collaborated with her mother on three books of verse when she was 16 years old and her mother wrote the text and Henrietta illustrated them. She was especially active in illustration during 1911-17.

Le Mair adopted the name "SAIDA" when she married H.P. Baron van Tuyll van Serooskerken in 1920. The newlywed couple converted to Sufism, a religion of universal brotherhood and love. The couple soon committed to helping the poor and contributing to charitable causes. They eventually set up their home in The Hague.

The last known book that Le Mair illustrated was Christmas Carols for Young Children (1946). She lived until 1966 but was not active as an illustrator in the last 20 years of her life." --[ed]WW

** Please note, the overall colors are muted, by nature of Saida's design style. Contrast is added so that you may see the age discolorations (though slight) and fine detailing of this artistic print. The detailed image provided is a fair depiction of actual tones. Thank you. **
