Item description for Vintage Art Nouveau Sash Brooch Pin Gold Tone Cabochon Flowers Signed

This is a beautiful vintage oval brooch or sash pin that was made by C&R. It has detailed gold and copper tone metalwork. I can't say for sure what the metal is, it looks like brass and a magnet doesn't attract it, but it may be something else. It has a foliage design consisting of raised flowers and leaves and a ribbon. It has a peachy pink mottled or marbled stone in the center in a bezel setting; the stone may be glass or a composite. The metal face of the brooch is textured. It measures approximately 2 ½ inches long and 1 ¾ inches tall. This type of sash brooch was popular from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. It was often worn by the ladies at the waist instead of a belt or on a sash. It has the maker’s hallmark on the back: an oval with a pyramid or triangle shape and C & R. This hallmark is often seen on the sash pins, but it has never been identified to a specific jeweler.

It is in nice vintage condition as you can see from the many enlarged photographs. The metal does show some age-related wear, consistent with use, and some darkening of the finish, especially on the back near the hallmark. There are slight surface scratches as well. It closes with an early simple C-clasp in working order; it is secure and holds well, although there is a slight bend to the pin itself. It has a lovely rich aged patina to it and I have not polished it, I will leave any polishing up to you. If you are looking for an unused mint condition pin, this is not for you, it was obviously worn and loved for many years.
