WHAT IS VALERIAN ROOT?
The root of the Valerian plant is pressed into a fresh juice or made into a powder and used for anti-stress purposes. This extract is available in several forms including capsules, tablets and tea. It is mainly used to aid sleep and promote a feeling of calm. Valerian has a very long history of use; it has been taken to fight insomnia, nerve conditions like anxiety and restlessness dating back to the second century and in Europe, it found new popularity during the 17th century.
Valerian root is widely used and respected by the general population and physicians for its sedative effects and anti-anxiety capabilities.
It’s very common for valerian root to be included in sleep-promoting tea blends, but it doesn’t just offer a solid night’s sleep — it’s also amazing at naturally calming anxiety and can even lower blood pressure, among other tremendous benefits.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VALERIAN ROOT
1) FOR INSOMNIA
Insomnia can have a dramatic effect on your quality of life. Insomnia is a real issue these days and estimates suggest that it is so common that some 60 million Americans are affected at some point. Sleep deprivation can have very far reaching consequences. Other potential effects of insomnia include depression and anxiety, poor skin health and even potential weight gain so it is vital that we do all that we can to ensure that we are getting enough sleep. There are a number of potential home remedies and tactics that you can try and one such natural aid is valerian root.
Valerian root is considered to be gentle and safe when used properly for those who are seeking a good night’s sleep.
A number of studies have been conducted to evaluate the efficacy of valerian root as an alternative insomnia remedy.
Studies show that valerian reduces the time it takes to fall asleep and improves the quality of sleep, so if you can’t sleep, it may be just what you’re looking for.
Valerian root is often combined with other sedating herbs, such as hops (Humulus lupulus) and lemon balm (Melissa officianalis), to fight insomnia.
Why can valerian root help you sleep so well? Valerian extract can cause sedation is by increasing your brain’s GABA level. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, and in large enough quantities it can cause a sedative effect.
Results from an in vitro study suggest that valerian extract may cause GABA to be released from brain nerve endings and then block GABA from being taken back into nerve cells. In addition, valerian’s valerenic acid inhibits an enzyme that destroys GABA, another way that valerian can improve your GABA levels and promote a great night’s rest.

2) FOR ANXIETY
If you are prone to anxiety, you will be very familiar with its horrible effects and will have doubtless tried a number of remedies already. If you are at your wit’s end and feel like nothing is helping, then valerian might provide a safe and natural solution.
Many experts recommend valerian root as an alternative solution for anxiety because of its ability to increase the brain’s GABA levels. There is some scientific evidence supporting its use for anxiety but as with insomnia, the results are far from conclusive.
Scientists have found that valerian root increases the amount of a chemical called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA helps regulate nerve cells and calms anxiety.  The valerenic acid and valerenol contained in valerian root extract act as anti-anxiety agents.

3) AS A SEDATIVE
Valerian Root Extract's  other known qualities make it a good sedative candidate. Its ability to promote sleep and ease anxiety coupled with its known effects on the nervous system means it has the potential to be used as a mild sedative effect. By improving GABA levels, valerian makes it easier for both the mind and body to relax. Since relaxation is the antithesis of stress, valerian root is an excellent natural way to help keep your stress down and your quality of life up.

HOW TO TAKE VALERIAN ROOT
If you are thinking of taking valerian root, it is best to speak with your doctor in advance. Take it as you directed on the package or as you have been instructed by your health care practitioner.
If you are taking valerian to treat your insomnia, it should be taken an hour or two before bedtime but you should be aware that it might take several weeks before it takes effect.
For anxiety disorders, you can take valerian up to 3 times spread out throughout the day.
By reducing anxiety and improving the length and quality of sleep, valerian root can significantly help with daily stress management. Chronic stress can make you feel anxious, but anxiety can also make you feel more stressed out.

VALERIAN PRECAUTIONS AND INTERACTIONS

Although Valerian is regarded as generally safe, there are still precautions that you need to take and possible side effects that you should be aware of.
Studies have not demonstrated any adverse effect on fetal development; nevertheless pregnant women should avoid taking valerian.
Because of its mild sedative effect, valerian may adversely affect your focus and reaction speed and should not be taken when you are operating machinery or driving.
