I am unsure what these beads are made of.  They appear to be bakelite or a similar material.  They are definitely not glass.  There is a slight facet to each bead and they are hand tied between each bead.  Apparently it was a necklace and it broke and my relative tied it together with a piece of ribbon.  Because they are hand tied they could be worn as a sautoir and tied in the front or they could be retied together to form a long necklace with no clasp.  I hesitate to call these costume jewelry because I think the necklace was handcrafted.  The knots are very large and not uniform.  The string is 50+ inches in length. They were always in a smoke free home.
