Blue Mistflower (Eupatorium coelestinum, Conoclinium coelestinum)

Blue Mistflower is native to the woodlands of the Mid-Atlantic region. Sometimes called Hardy Ageratum, because it looks like the annual Ageratum, this perennial is actually in the same family as Joe Pye Weed and Bonesets. The fluffy edged flowers are a butterfly magnet and a must for any butterfly garden. In moist conditions will spread by rhizomes and can be used as a ground cover. Plant in drier areas if you do not wish it to spread. The plant has been seen growing on the back of dunes which suggests it is salt tolerant as well. The plant will come to you in a 3.5 inch pot. Soak thoroughly before planting.

Description: Flat topped clusters of pale blue/purple fuzzy flowers atop 1 - 3 ft stems, leaves opposite.

Culture: Moist soils, sun to part shade, found naturally along stream banks and low woods. Bloom time - August to October Zones 4 - 9.

Companion plants: Goldenrods, Asters, Obedient Plant, Bonesets, Rudbeckias, Narrow leaved Sunflower.

Wildlife benefit: Nectar for bees and butterflies particularly Monarchs on migration.

Eco-friendly grower

All of my plants are grown using earth friendly techniques, from seed collection to watering with rainwater. Pots are 100% recycled, some are re-used containers, others are made from recycled plastics. Plants are fed with PLANT-TONE by Espoma, an organic fertilizer and/or worm castings. I grow plants that can replace those lost to development in order to help sustain wildlife that depend on them. You can be assured that you are not getting plants from the wild, which is unethical and further contributes to habitat loss.

***Check my other listings. I am adding more wildlife-friendly native perennials everyday***
