Slender or Erect Goldenrod (Solidago erectus)
Slender Goldenrod, sometimes referred to as Erect or Showy Goldenrod, is native to the mid-Atlantic region. This plant grows occasionally in the NJ Pine Barrens, mainly dry, open woods, thickets and roadsides. It is different from other Goldenrods in that the flowering head is long, narrow and cylindrical, rather than one-sided as are most other Goldenrods. It is drought tolerant and late blooming, a good source of nectar for wildlife. The plant stays basal through the first year and work on root system, helping it resist drought. The plant will come to you in a 3.5 inch pot. Water regularly until established.
Description: 1 - 4 ft high, with wand-like yellow spikes. Lance shaped basal leaves, sometimes reddish in color.
Culture: Dry open areas, sun to part shade, average to dry soils, blooms Aug - Sept, Zones 3 - 9.
Companion plants: Asters, Bonesets, Butterflyweed, Fireweed
Wildlife benefit: Provides late season nectar for migrating wildlife.
Ecotype: Altantic County, NJ
All of my plants are grown using earth friendly techniques, from seed collection to watering with rainwater. Pots are 100% recycled, some are re-used containers, others are made from recycled plastics. Plants are fed with PLANT-TONE by Espoma, an organic fertilizer and/or worm castings. I grow plants that can replace those lost to development in order to help sustain wildlife that depend on them. You can be assured that you are not getting plants from the wild, which is unethical and further contributes to habitat loss.
