Chapter 1: "That woman has a passion for respectability," said Mrs. Valliant, the lady of the Manor of Abbots Riding, Eastshire. "She will keep us all up to our p's and q's."

She was speaking of Mrs. Heseltine, who had just come to settle in the Ridings and had expressed herself vehemently on some point or other during an afternoon call. New people in the Ridings were something of a novelty and an interest.

The inhabitants of Eastshire at that time were apt to boast of it--if it could be called a boast--that it was the only county in England where one could still live thirty, over thirty, even forty miles from a railway station. A London newspaper, devoting an article to it ruralities, had headed it, "Darkest Eastshire." The reason of its inaccessibility could not easily be defined. Perhaps it lay somewhat in the fact that there were no building leases to be had. Eastshire was feudal. It preferred to be feudal. But that was before the Great War, which brought its changes.  1.2     (#0000870)
