This gold tone bookmark is a representation of one of the Carpet Pages from “The Book of Durrow”. It is obviously a simplified version of the page and not completely accurate as to detail. The card measures 3 3/8 inches by 3 3/8 inches square and the bookmark is approximately 1 7/8 inches x 1 3/8 inches.
This is a Museum Bookmark made by David Howell & Company in New York. The back of the card reads: “We support the environment by using only suppliers who meet EPA standards. This card is printed on recycled paper. The plastic is recyclable PVC3. It is ©TC, 1994 Made in USA, BKC1167 Design/Mfg DH&C”.
The front reads: “The Book of Durrow Folio 192v (Detail) Bookmark” and “The Book of Durrow, one of the greatest treasures of Trinity College Library Dublin, is a manuscript copy of the Gospels dating from around the year 675 AD. Richly decorated, it contains several ‘carpet’ pages of ornament unrelated to text. Here, on folio 192v, a circle of interlace surrounds a cross, with biting beasts forming a frame. Sales benefit Trinity College Library Dublin, Ireland.”
The bookmark is in excellent condition. It belonged to my Mom, but she never used it. I’m sure they purchased it as a souvenir. The bookmark is still attached to the original card and is inside a protective plastic sleeve. There are a few stains on the outer plastic sleeve, but as you can see by the enlarged photographs, once the card is removed it is in new condition.
